Session Title: Canadian Study of Violence Against Paramedics

Due to the nature of their work, paramedics respond to environments that may be dangerous or chaotic, which in turn presents an increased risk of exposure to workplace violence. There exists a substantive body of research with respect to workplace violence within the paramedic sectors in the United States, Australia, and Europe, and limited regional, cross-sectional research within the Canada (i.e., SK, AB, ON). The breadth, depth, scope, and severity of the violence against paramedics in Canada on a national level remains relatively unknown to all levels of government, paramedic service organizations, professional paramedic associations, labour groups, industry stakeholders, and paramedics and their families who are affected by violence. The Canadian Study of Violence Against Paramedics (CSVAP) will take place over a period of 14 months.

Using a mixed-methods study design, the study consists of three parts:

(1) development and implementation of a robust survey tool to identify, quantify, and document the exposure of violent acts committed against paramedics by the public at large, and, by individuals within paramedic service organizations.

(2) personal interviews with paramedics to explore live experience of violence

(3) personal interviews with family members of paramedics who have experienced violence. This presentation will report on the findings from Part 1 of the study. Given that the mental health and wellbeing of paramedics has been highlighted as an issue of importance by Public Safety Canada, this research has the potential to illustrate a significant source of stress for paramedics and better inform possible workforce health interventions.

During your visit to Winnipeg, we hope that you can also take the time to discover Winnipeg’s turn-of-the-last century Exchange District, friendly neighborhoods decorated with colourful murals and favourite attractions showcasing the city’s interesting history and cultural diversity. We look forward to seeing you in June.

Regards,

Kelly
