Understand post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and reduce operational stress injury in your paramedic service using 7 core principles: Paramedic Chiefs release report on responding to operational stress
Operational stress is the everyday reality for the frontlines in our paramedic services. The Paramedic Chiefs of Canada commissioned this first Canadian report of its kind to describe what paramedic services can do in the face of operational stress-related mental health injuries. We want to share the principles outlined in this report with our members so that you, too, may understand the issues and what your paramedic service can do.
The Paramedic Chiefs of Canada asked its ad-hoc committee on operational stress to find out what are the best and most promising responses to stress-related mental health issues for paramedics and dispatchers. With expertise from paramedic services across the country, the ad-hoc committee’s report to the Paramedic chiefs explains in clear language what the mental health issues are and what programs and services are working. The report includes resources that you can put to use, references for more detailed understanding, and the proven strategies that other paramedic services in Canada are using.
This report sums up what we know about operational stress injury in Canadian paramedic services in 2014. Bringing together the latest insight from the scientific literature and the best practices currently in use, this report paves the way for Canadian paramedic services to be at the forefront of responding to operational stress among the emergency services and healthcare sectors.
